First-year NWF State coaches make a statement

05/13/09 - By WILL PARCHMAN Northwest Florida Daily News 315-4484 | willp@nwfdailynews.com

Mickey Englett hit the hiring equivalent of the lottery last year.

When the Northwest Florida State College athletic director signed three new head coaches in an unprecedented four-month flurry, his expectations reasonably were tempered.

Given the adjustment period necessary to the tough Panhandle Conference and the relative letdown each of the three programs had experienced the year before, there wasn't much Englett could do but sit back and hope for the best.

What happened next caught him almost completely by surprise. Now he thinks he's looking at perhaps his best coaching staff from top to bottom that he's had at NWF State College.

Raiders mirrored Byerley's passion

By WILL PARCHMAN Northwest Florida Daily News 315-4484 | willp@nwfdailynews.com

NICEVILLE - After losing his daughter three years ago while he was an assistant at Auburn, Jack Byerley couldn't look at softball the same way.

The drive and the passion still existed, but the fire for the day-to-day process of the sport just wasn't there. If the Tigers lost a game, it almost didn't matter because Byerley had just lost something infinitely more important. And worse still, he didn't know if it would ever return.

His first year at the helm of a resurgent Northwest Florida State College softball program changed all that.

Raider Baseball exceeds expectations in Martin's first season

Northwest Florida State College baseball takes step forward in Doug Martin's first year at helm

By WILL PARCHMAN Northwest Florida Daily News 315-4484 | willp@nwfdailynews.com

NICEVILLE - If Doug Martin had paid any serious attention to the expectations, or lack thereof, levied on his squad this season, it wouldn't have left much room for optimism.

The Northwest Florida State College baseball team was the only Panhandle Conference team left off the state's preseason top 10, the Raiders had but one returning player from last year and Martin himself had no idea where he'd play most of the roster he had. The first-year Raiders coach was treading in unchartered territory in more ways than one.

NWF State Softball finishes runner-up at the State Tournament

AUBURNDALE - Once again, missed opportunities came back to haunt the Northwest Florida State softball team against Gulf Coast.

After an 0-for-8 effort with runners in scoring position in a one-run loss to the Commodores on Saturday, the Raiders left the bases loaded in the top of the fourth and saw Gulf Coast respond with four runs in the bottom half of the frame on its way to a 10-0 win on Sunday in the FCCAA Gulf District/NJCAA Region 8 Tournament.

The loss eliminated the Raiders from the tournament, while Gulf Coast advanced to the state title game and earned a spot in the NJCAA Division I Softball Tournament in St. George, UT.

NWF State lost the final four meetings of the season to the Commodores, after taking the first two matchups.

AUBURNDALE - With its back against the wall, the Northwest Florida State College softball team came out fighting in an elimination game against Panhandle Conference rival Chipola.

The Raiders (44-9) rallied from an early three-run deficit with a five-run effort in the third inning and knocked off the Indians 8-4 on Saturday night in the FCCAA Gulf District H/NJCAA Region 8 Tournament.

Northwest Florida State, the ninth-ranked team in the nation, was put into the loser's bracket with a 2-1 defeat at the hands of another Panhandle Conference rival, Gulf Coast.

The Raiders will get another shot at the Commodores today at 9 a.m.

Northwest Florida State must defeat Gulf Coast twice today in order to advance to the national tournament.

NWF State impresses in day one at State Tourney

From staff reports

Even though his squad won more than 40 games during the regular season, Northwest Florida State College softball coach Jack Byerley still insisted the Raiders needed to take their game to a new level once the state tournament arrived.

He got exactly what he wished for on Day 1 at the FCCAA Gulf District Tournament in Auburndale.

The Raiders (43-8) punished their opponents on Friday, dropping South Florida Community College 8-2 before whipping Pensacola 8-0 in five innings.

"We're playing ball like we're supposed to play ball," Byerley said.
