NWF women, men teams open tourney with wins

11/7/2009 – NWF State women, men teams open tournament with wins From staff reports

The Northwest Florida State College basketball teams opened the Quality Inn Classic with a pair of quality victories.

The NWF State College women's basketball team recovered from a few early hiccups to down Snead State 70-40 in the Raiders' season opener.

On the men's side, the Raiders (2-0) put forth a high-scoring effort to take care of Albany Tech 108-87.

For the women, sophomore Josette Campbell picked up where she left off last year, scoring a gamehigh 20 points and snagging six rebounds.

Tallahassee transfer Shamar Harris scored 19 points in her NWF State College debut, while point guard Myeisha Simms chipped in eight points and six assists.

The Raiders (1-0) led just 30-19 at halftime but picked it up in the second frame.

"I was happy with our intensity in the second half defensively," coach Bart Walker said.

Brian Bryant drained six 3-pointers in tallying 27 points for the NWF State College men.

Kahlil Owens added his first double-double for the Raiders, scoring 18 points and pulling down 10 rebounds.

NWF State College had six players score in double figures.

Siddeeq Cooper added 18 points for the balanced Raiders' offense. Latraius Mosley and Brandon Crawford chipped in 11 apiece and Toby Veal had 10.

NWF State College coach Bruce Stewart said the Raiders had a mixed effort.

"Just the opposite of Monday," Stewart said. "We played well offensively, but really struggled to stop them defensively. We must play better on the defensive end Saturday night."

The NWF State College men play Georgia Perimeter at 7:30 tonight in the Quality Inn Classic. The women face Enterprise Ozark at 5:30 p.m.
