NICEVILLE For the Northwest Florida State College women's basketball team, the final buzzer on Wednesday at Raider Gym was a cathartic sound.
The No. 16 Raiders overcame a large deficit and perhaps some sagging expectations to end their three-game losing streak in dramatic fashion.
Myeisha Simms knocked down a 3-pointer with 1:55 left to play, giving the Raiders a lead that they wouldn't relinquish, as they held on for a 65-60 win over Chipola College.
Simms' shot capped a stirring comeback for the Raiders after they trailed by as many as 15 points in the second half.
"I'm really happy with how the girls competed over the last 15 minutes," NWF State coach Bart Walker said. "We played with passion, heart and determination. That's what wins games."
The Raiders (15-5, 2-5 in Panhandle Conference) outrebounded the Indians 48-30, led by Vontrice Dennis' 16 boards.
Things started familiarly ugly for the Raiders, who again struggled offensively in the first half. Meanwhile, the Indians (11-12, 1-6) shot 50 percent from the floor and got a big night from Bianca Jarrett, who scored a game-high 30 points.
The Raiders' frustration mounted as NWF State was called for three technical fouls, including one on Walker with 9:49 to play and the Raiders trailing by 13 points. However, that technical seemed to galvanize the Raiders.
After Walker's technical, the Raiders started knocking down shots and playing inspired defense. Starting with Melisa Mendes' 3-pointer with 8:45 to play, the Raiders went on a 20-4 run to take a 57-56 lead, their first lead since the first half.
The two teams traded buckets until Simms' clutch 3-pointer gave them the lead for good. The Indians had a couple of chances to tie in the final minute, but Jarrett and Tykiesha O'Neil both missed game-tying 3-pointers.
Dennis led the Raiders with 17 points. Her inside presence, along with some clutch shots from Shamar Harris, were key in the Raiders' second half run.
